Medieval hose.

A while back now, I made some hoses for two different people with different needs and wishes.
First pair is part of a medieval kit for a musician, all handsewn. They were made in a lovely, thick and soft, slightly fulled wool fabric with a cut surface, choosen by the musician to match the rest of his kit.
The model is from the Greenland finds.

It's the first time I made a pair with feet for someone and it was interesting shaping them and fitting them, and trying to sew the seems as flat and non-intrusive as possible. We only had one fitting so they are not as snug as they could have been but they did look nice when worn.
Next pair was for a young dude fighting and reenacting late viking age/early medieval. He'd chosen a nice two-coloured twill in white and natural grey, quite suitable for his period.
On both pairs I reinforced the tie-up hole with a small piece of leather on the back. I don't know if this is the way to make the hole strong but it's possible and I made it on the back so it wouldn't be seen, also when you make things for others you want to make sure it's well made and durable.

I didn't have enough fabric so I made some piecing and extra seams, very HA, I think some of the greenlandic finds have extra seams too.

Thorsbergsbyxor till en norsk viking. Thorsberg trousers for a norwegian viking.

*
Got a late order of a pair of thorsberg trousers for uncle Nils, because his own trousers were so old and torn they almost fell apart. With "late order" I mean a little more than a week before the event they were needed for...but of course I fixed it, and the holiday of 1st of may came right on time.
*
As it happens I did have a piece of indigo dyed diamond twill at home, that was just waiting to become trousers for someone who understand to appreciate such material. Close weave, durable and with that lovely wooly shine, bought from the fabric german Jürg at Hornbore Ting last autumn, perfect for trousers!

Vikingakläder till en 1-åring. Viking clothing for a 1 year old.

*
What do we know about children's clothing during the Viking Age? Not much at all really! One can look at different sources and draw some conclusions. When one is researching to find out more about what children wore during this period one often looks at finds from children's graves and it's quit a sad research to make. One of the best documented children's graves there is in Sweden is the so called Birka girl, (+other link, also in Swedish ) who have some lovely grave gifts who supposedly shows her parents social status, an important clue. I have supposed that children during the viking age wore simple kyrtles when they where small, and that they, when they got bigger got clothes looking more like grown ups clothes, which was common in a longer historical perspective.

*
I chose to use the softest woolen fabric I had, a small piece of apple green fabric with one side brushed, that I bought for more than 15 years ago at a medieval event at Glimmingehus in Sweden. The fabric was just enough for the kyrtle but the pieces are not cut following the grain of the fabric so the brushed side is outwards. To save fabric the kyrtle consists of only four pieces, a front and a back piece + sleeves. Front and back piece are A-shaped so no side gores was needed to create width. I chose to sew with a, reltively thick and soft woolen yarn so that all the seems would be as comfortable as possible.
*
To be more decorative I put a piece of thin, purple wool fabric around the neck. I chose wool instead of silk for this because it would be more practical if there is spilling and drooling and such. Yet, to match the blinginess of the parents viking kit I embroidered with plantdyed silk thread around the neckpiece. As it happens I also put some silk applications and embroidery around the sleeve edges so that the little one can see it and feel it and enjoy the luster of the silk.
Oh, and I also needlebound a small cap and a pair of socks for the little outfit. There are evidence of needlebound socks but the cap is purely my own design based on later children's caps and I chose to use the completely unhistorical yarn Hemp Tweed from Rowan Yarn because I'm a bit in love with it because it's soft and has a lovely luster and because it is really lovely to needlebind with.

Oddvins cote, 12-1300-tal. Oddvin's cote, 13-14th century.

*
I have sewn a cote. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to finish it before deadline, but at least it is fully usable. Hand sewing takes time, I'll finish it on another occasion. The cote is suitable to the shift 12/1300's.
Mi parti is so fancy! I want to do more!
*
Before it was sent off to its owner, I had time to photograph it at home in the kitchen, in the fine September light.

Guddaltunikan(10-1100-tal), den med krage. The Guddal tunic(11-12th century), the one with a collar.

I decided that I wanted to make the Guddal tunic, the one with a collar, for the very fine man. The tunic suits perfect for his groups timeframe since it is dated ca.1035-1165 AD. For this project he chose a beautiful green, wool fabric that he plant dyed last autumn.

Guddaltunikan, detaljbild av kragen.
The Guddal tunic, detail of the collar.

*The details that I find characteristic of the Guddal shirt are:
* It has a specially formed, upright collar.
* It is form-fitting at the waist.

 * The fabric it is made of is light colored in one side, asymmetricly patterned, which contributes to a different and unexpected look with a light colored border on the right side of the tunic and light colored sleeves.
* The lower corners of the tunic appears to be rounded off.

This wasn't supposed to be a copy of the original, the very fine man doesn't have the same measurments or shape as the person who the original was made for, so adjustments to make it fit him were done.

The original doesn't have any shoulder seams, the back and front piece is in one, and so is our. The sleeves on the original is sewn straight on to the bodice but that did not fit with the fine mans measurments, then the sleeves would have been very short, and that also made it into a non form-fitted shirt.

Not much left of the original, one might think, but I think that what is most distinctive is the collar, it is very special, and I had no reason to change that, neither did I change the rounded off corners.
On the pictures I had access to, see above, the collar lies all crumpled up and it is difficult to get an accurate impression of the way it was designed. I also looked in the book "Klær og formspråk i norsk middelalder" (Tr. Clothes and design in the Norwegian Middle Ages...) by Marianne Vedeler, where she, among other things brings up this tunic, but there are no direct information on the collar design. (Read it though, it is very interesting.)

I myself, think that the result is something which is likely.
I chose to line the back of the collar with a fabric in a contrasting color, partly to make it able to stand on its own, and partly because I wanted to get at least some of the two-color impression that the original give.
In the pictures of the inside you can see a pretty brutal seam, I ignored that completely and sewed as nicely as I could with wool thread.
 Med plats för skägg.
With room for beard.
Oh yeah!
Avrundade nedre hörn.
Rounded off corners.
The red lining pops out sometimes when the collar is upright, or one can fold it down and then it shows clearly, a nice little detail to look at. What do you think of my interpretation?

Vikingatida kaftan/kappa till en vän. Viking age kaftan/coat for a friend.

A friend needed a coat or caftan that could work in Viking reenactment, I got a tremendous desire to make it,  ideas and questions arose.
I knew a number of reconstructed garments of that kind, but what were they based on? I thought about finds of textiles from Birka interpreted to what is called a "birka coat", fragments of what appears to be over garments from Hedeby, finds of caftans from Russia and Moscevaya Balka, I became more and more uncertain about what this garment should look like but Christmas was approaching and it was supposed to be a fancy Christmas present, the time came to make decisions.
I decided to go on intuition and create a garment that my friend would be happy about and which I would feel proud of, based on the knowledge I have.
It became a coat with clear caftan features, with details and stitches from Hedeby and it was so good that I want to sew one for myself too, yes, I definitely need a new coat.

See for yourself from today's spontaneous photo shoot (spontaneous as in-no full viking kit on the model ...).
I haven't arranged any fixed fastener but the front pieces are overlapping and that gives several styling possibilities. If only closed with a belt the neckline may fall out as kind of a lapel -see above, if one has tortoise brooches underneath one can get a nice "birka coat effect" with a trefoil under the bust and the lapels on either side of the tortoise brooches, if it's windy and cold one can  close it with a brooch up  in the  neck.
Shoulder and side seams are from Hedeby. Armholes are rounded at the front, the back is made up of two pieces, a rear section that reaches down to the waist and a trapezoidal gusset from the waist down, after finds from Hedeby.

Kurs i vikinga- och medeltida "draktsøm". Course in viking age and medieval costume making.

:oD
Här följer en liten bildkavalkad från veckan:
During week 31, I was course leader for a costume course during Middelalderuka in Numedal(the Medieval week in Numedal, Norway), at the Medieval workshop, throughout five (!) days. It was five intense and exciting days, with much fun and laughter and concentrated silence. We worked on the basis of findings and contemporary images and all the participants were very talented and open to my nerdy ideas, and the result was subsequently excellent. : oD
Here is a small picture cavalcade from the week:

There were several other crafts courses at the Medieval workshop and during lunch I took the opportunity to walk around and see what the others came up with.
Med en nysmidd pilspets i handen.
With a newly forged arrow head in the hand.

Där var både smideskurs OCH järnblästringskurs...
There were both a forging course AND an iron blasting(?smelting?) course ...
...and a basket making course. Baskets of spruce root...or was it birch root. I don't remember but it looked really interesting. :o)
There were also courses in sprang, which is quite big in Norway, laggning (wooden vessels), bow making and more. Very nice initiative and fun with a lot of dedicated people in the same place.

10-1100-tals kjortel. 11-12th century tunic.

This hand-stitched wool tunic is inspired by menswear in northern Europe and Scandinavia in the 11 - and 12th century. To achieve a fashionable silhouette I have looked at both the Danish find, Moselundskjorteln, and on contemporary illustrations.
As in several contemporary illustrations, we have pulled up the tunic a lot above the belt, so that it really bulches out.
MS. Junius 11.
Bodleian Library.
Also the sleeves are, as in the picture above, extra long and narrow so that they form folds on the forearm.
In some illustrations one can see a decorative edge at neck and cuffs, here represented by a narrow edging embroidered with stem stitch in madder dyed wool yarn.
The Moselund tunic have very narrow sleeves but it's made extra room at the elbow.
The gussets on the Moselund tunic has a special design which results in puckers and that they pouffe out.
Såhär glada är vi över resultatet! :oD'
This is how happy we are with the result! :oD
Tack för modellandet Ole Magne.
Thank you for modelling, Ole Magne. :o)

If you want to read more about the Moselund tunic I can recommend "Woven into the earth" by Else Østergård.
